IV Burn
The IV in Ellie's hand was taped very well, and functioning quite well until Friday night, Saturday morning, then it leaked. Because it was taped so well, Mollie (our nurse that night) couldn't see that there was a problem. Mollie is one of my favorite nurses, so I'm sorry it had to happen to her. I have posted these pictures on another site just in case you don't like little baby blood.
They did some interesting things with this lesion.
First, they put a plastic bubble-like wrap around her wrist with nitroglycerine underneath. This was to expand the blood vessels and aid in healing. They kept that on for about 6 - 8 hours so it could absorb through the skin.
Next they put the LEFT arm in a heating pack. According to the nurse, by heating one appendage the body will compensate and heat the other. Heat = Blood. It sounded like a pretty tricky way to get blood to the wound.
The good news is that it is healing quickly.
