Hooray for real food!
Today it was my turn to spend the day at the hospital. Ellie was just waking up when I got there, so the nurse took the billi spotlight off her for a little while so I could have some mommy /baby face time. My sweet girl opened her eyes and looked at me while I talked to her. I also read Winnie the Pooh to her and showed her the pictures. She tried to throw a fit when I took the book away. She really likes being read to.
They decided that since Elizabeth was doing so well taking 1 cc of breastmilk every three hours, they increased it to 3 cc's every three hours. She is doing GREAT with it, and her little insides seem to be working the way they should.
I got to talk to the neonatologist (Dr. Chan is our main one, but this is the weekend) and she said that they are taking very small steps with our baby. They change one thing at a time, and let her become stable, and then do something else and let her become stable. She told me that we might be doing this for a long time. I told her I had no problem taking all the time we needed...it beats the news we got Tuesday where the cardiologist we talked to was saying, "If we're going to do surgery, it will have to be before Friday." Not to mention how risky the surgery would have been, even if Ellie was a good canditate for it.
Ellie is doing much better tolerating her situation. She doesn't have to be sedated nearly so often, which is good. We have to be careful however that she doesn't get too excited because then her heart rate and blood pressure go up and it works her heart too hard. She was doing that today, and it took the nurse (and I) a while to calm her down. I think the thing that set her off was a messy diaper. That girl does NOT like to be dirty or wet. The respiratory therapist has also weaned her down to 22 breaths per minute from the respirator. This is down from the 36 she was on Thursday. Again, gradual but positive steps in the right direction.
One adorable thing she did today was sneeze. The weird part was you couldn't hear it because of the tube in her throat. It was hilarious to watch this tiny person screw up her face and see the sneeze but get no sound. She just looked at me afterward as if to ask what just happened to her. I wish I had gotten it on video.
