Ellie Dawn

Ellie Dawn was born with a congential heart defect called Aortic Stenosis. This is her story.

Ellie had a rough day on Wednesday. She was been breathing harder and her temperature was still going up and down. I was worried because I came down with a sore throat Wed morning and was scared that I exposed her to something the day before. They have tested her 3 times for bacterial infections, but they have all come back negative (whew). I kept calling the hospital throughout the day, going crazy not being there.

I finally got most of the info around 5:30. Ellie got her echocardiogram and chest x-ray a day early, because cardiology wanted to make sure her heart was doing ok. Her PDA has opened back up a little bit, which means she's dealing with some pulmonary hypotension. Her heart is still very big and hasn't shrunk at all. Mostly, we got the "no change" senario again. She is a little acidodic again but not bad.

The nurse told me that they may decide to put Ellie back on the respirator for a couple of days to give her a rest. She has been working really hard to breath on her own, and it's wearing her out. She has been pretty lethargic rather than her perky self.

I talked to the Nurse Practitioner at 11:30 last night to check on Elizabeth before I went to bed. The NP told me Ellie had thrown up, so they emptied the rest of her stomach out and stopped her feedings for a while. After that, Ellie rested a lot easier, so they might start her feedings again in the morning if she acts hungry. They are upping her calories through her IV's because she is burning so much more energy than she was before. (This is from breathing on her own.)

It just about drove me beserk staying home today, but I didn't want to risk sharing germs with my girl. Chad went to see her after work and was pretty positive about how she was doing. I don't know how parents do this kind of thing for months on end. I hate not knowing what's going to happen and how long it will take my baby to get well enough to come home. I certainly don't want her coming home until she can, but not having a definite time frame to give an end in sight is really hard for me. Yes, I am the president of Control Freaks Anonymous...how did you know?
